Lisa Engelken is an extraordinary singer and fearless performing artist. Dubbed the “second trumpet” for her horn-like scatting and tonal clarity, this vocalist puts a chill back into jazz. Lisa careens through a myriad of moods & vocal styles, spicing her tunes with Portuguese, French, and Italian. Lisa’s theatrical training enables her to capture the intensity of the moment and captivate and engage audiences. Erin Gray, columnist for the Monterey Herald, describes Engelken’s performance as… “Bold…lush, exotic and just a little bit dangerous…like waves of sound and heat [that keep] rolling over me. When thinking of Lisa, I wrote down two names: Evil Kenivil and Janis Joplin. ‘Like Evil, she is a fearless daredevil, but never reckless, knowing exactly whether her voice can jump through a ring of fire and over 30 elephants--or whether it can go 31. And like Janis, she gives every ounce of herself onstage.” September 2007 Lisa Engelken is the recipient of the Bay Area Theatre Critic's Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Yitzhak in the successful 8-month run of the rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco.” As a composer, Lisa was awarded the Mova International Songwriting Award, Jazz Category in 2002 and is also the recipient of the Wammie Award for best Female Vocalist for her work as the notorious front-woman and songwriter for the Washington, DC-based sextet The ZIimmermans. Engelken is currently writing, arranging and recording a new Jazz Album entitled “From the Earth” which features some of the best young and innovative players in the Bay Area today. Lisa appeared at the 2007 San Jose Jazz Festival with jazz great Frank Martin on piano. She is excited to return to the Festival again this year again with Frank Martin to debut work from her upcoming album. myspace
