Dance party For the opening of the Festival, you are welcomed to join the Dancing Party on Friday, 8th at the Main stage. Form 5:00pm the VIP reserved seat area will be replaced by a real dance floor open to everyone. You will enjoy and dance the great musical performances of The Joe Ferrari Big Band (5:00pm) who will provide you a true sense of what is the big band sound and dance; Orquesta d'Soul (6:45pm) a band that prides itself on delivering both original high-energy Latin dance music and soulful R&B grooves. The pop delivery and style of the songs is unique due to the inclusion of folkloric Caribbean rhythms; Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (8:30pm) whose music concentrates on the sound of 1940s and 1950s swing played in clubs and lounges. Born in Dallas, Texas, Juan Pablo Chavez began his musical studies as a violinist and quickly developed a passion for learning and teaching classical music. He was accepted into the Dallas performing arts high school for both tuba and violin performance, and it was during this time that he was given the opportunity to study with amazing classical, jazz, and Latin musicians. Juan began to focus on improvisational music, particularly in Afro-Cuban styles. He learned the basics of Afro-Cuban music and its application to the violin. Wanting to increase his knowledge of contemporary styles, Juan traveled to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. There he studied and performed with numerous contemporary masters and continued his education as an Afro-Cuban violinist. Juan is currently working on his first solo album, Salsa for Strings, and is also writing a book on contemporary Afro-Cuban violin. A group of legendary Cuban musicians, some as old as their nineties, are brought together by Ry Cooder to record an album and to perform a concert in the United States. During the movie we see and hear some of the songs being recorded in Havana and in addition, many of the individual musicians talk about their lives in Cuba and about how they got started in music. The result is a film full of vitality and positive energy, which is also an absolute delight to musical ears. Phantom Galleries will present live visual collaborative art installations at the festival featuring local artists. Artists will be painting live murals on wall structures (8 x 8 feet) placed at the Main stage, the Rhythm & Blues stage and the Latin Jazz stage. The artists will be painting on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5pm. ValLimar has sung sacred music since she was five years old. She has been the cantor for several Jazz Liturgies at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. She has toured regionally, and has served as a cantor, principal vocalist, lector, and workshop presenter at the San Jose Jazz Festival, the National Jubilee Justice Conference, and the Los Angeles Liturgy Conference among others. Frank has been a professional musician for thirty years. He has been the composer/arranger for numerous Jazz Liturgies and concerts at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. He has also written many jazz compositions for both big bands and combos and has recently completed his first symphony.
